They are an independent body that report directly to parliament and seek excellence in the care of children in education. They visit all schools and childcare centres (called 'settings') to ensure these institutions deliver effective support for children through the EYFS with an aim to improve value for money at these establishments so that children, parents and the staff all benefit.
Once a nursery school has been inspected it will receive a full Ofsted report. This report grades the schools overall and for certain categories from 1 – 4. These grades are:
- 1 is outstanding
- 2 is good
- 3 is satisfactory
- 4 needs improvement
Schools are continually examined in relation to their previous inspections, with new reports noting what improvements have been made since the school’s last report.
